This BFAC curated invitational exhibition, “Art Narratives: Combining Text and Art”, highlights the written word and visual imagery. The six contemporary artists approach their art as a means of visual storytelling. They directly incorporate text into their work to convey their message. Yet each artist has their own distinctive voice as they use words and pictures as a straightforward method of self-expression: Paul Deery’s cryptic doodle drawings and sculpted letters deconstructs text to become essential abstract forms. The prints and encaustic artwork of Lucy Gans evoke personal life lessons of survival and persistence. Domenick Naccarato’s bold multimedia work confronts viewers with fragmented words and numerical references. David P. Richards dissects his photography to create cut paper collages that layer his images of everyday commonalities with a poetic grace. Maryann Riker's artist books and mixed-media works contrast socially impactful issues from a historical perspective. The highly detailed fabric quilt designs of Barbara Schulman become sly commentaries on contemporary societal matters. The “word art” in this exhibition, whether painted, printed, or sculpted, takes us on these artists’ personal journeys with their foremost skills, divergent media, and pure imagination on display.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (www.bfac-lv.com).
